Painting
Kathleen Schmalz
Kathleen Schmalz works from her studio in Sooke and on-location around the Victoria area, creating works of unsentimental Canadiana in acrylic, oil, mixed media, and photography.
Schmalz has had a lifetime of commitment to visual arts and arts education. Being creative is where she finds her joy; whether instructing at the University of Victoria, curating exhibitions, or doing her own art work. Among her qualifications she holds a PhD in Visual and Performing Arts.
While living and working in Edmonton, Alberta and then in Guelph, Ontario, Schmalz missed the ocean and the wild heavy forest that borders it. After returning to Vancouver Island, many of her images result from hiking, kayaking, and living on the ocean’s edge. Along with appreciating the dynamism of a dramatic sunset, she also revels in the creation of quiet moments of low contrast where emotion and tension are understated. Her work can be found in private and public collections across Canada and beyond.
