Painting

Etsuko Kaji-Holley

“Wassily Kandinsky once said, ‘Lend your ears to music, open your eyes to painting … stop thinking! Just ask yourself whether the work has enabled you to walk into a hitherto unknown world. If the answer is yes, what more do you want?’

The inspiration for abstract paintings comes from nature, organic shapes, sounds (especially music), feelings, and memories. Brush strokes are influenced by the practice of Japanese calligraphy and the compositions of Ikebana (Japanese flower arrangement) when I lived in Tokyo. The motivation to paint originates from the flow of internal and external energy (Ki).

Currently, acrylic is mainly used as a medium along with other mark-making tools such as charcoal, pencils, and pastels. Experimentation with various brushes and tools, sometimes sourced from unconventional places like the kitchen cabinet. Exploration of new styles and techniques continues through self-learning, attending workshops and residency programs.

I am always grateful for the support of my family, friends, mentors, fellow artists, curators and the community.”
