Oriental miniatures were painted predominantly in Iran and India, where royalty had a long tradition of creating and collecting manuscript libraries. Calligraphers would live within the court and produce commissioned manuscripts, usually to commemorate special occasions. In the exhibition are approximately 25 miniatures from the Gallery’s collection.

JAMES GORDANEER: THE CIRCUS SERIES

Lyrical images of the circus including dancers on the slack wire, acrobats on horses, and unicylists are captured in 12 brightly painted canvasses by James Gordaneer.
An image painter, Gordaneer uses the circus to explore formal and colour considerations. This series is a culmination of recent explorations into abstraction, the use of flat panes of colour, and his earlier indulgences into painterly surrealism.

ROBERTA SUTHERLAND: EARTH BIRTHING

Victoria artist Roberta Sutherland creates her mixed media works by layering paint, paper, and found fabrics, incorporating torn edges and calligraphic strokes which recall the random symmetry of nature.
A world traveller, Sutherland uses predominently earth tones combined with metallic colours. She attributes her appreciation of texture and natural pigments to the time she spent in Africa.

MODERN JAPANESE ART

Ceramics, textile screens, oil paintings, and other works by 15 of Japan’s leading contemporary artists, including Saito, Hamada, Rosanjin, and anti-nuclear ceramicist Kazuaki Kita, are featured.
