Members’ Preview – Unexpected: The Life and Art of Sophie Pemberton, Canadian Artist
Sep 22 | 5:00 pm - 7:00 pmMembers are invited to bring one guest and join us from 5PM to 7PM for a free AGGV Members Only preview of Unexpected: The Life and Art of Sophie Pemberton, Canadian Artist.
Guest curated by Dr. Kathryn Bridge, this exhibition discusses Sophie Pemberton’s life (1869-1959), her family and social networks, her art training and accomplishments, and the historical times in which she lived. It includes women’s suffrage, the rise of modernism, the role of post impressionism in Canada and within Sophie’s own world, and of the influence she brings to today’s world. As an artist (born and raised in Victoria), Pemberton’s career was significant, yet she has been little studied in the contexts of Canadian and international art, and in the shadows far too long. This exhibition places her properly within the canon and includes works from private collections and those that have not been on exhibition for over 100 years.
Guest Curator Dr. Kathryn Bridge will be in attendance. There will be a cash bar featuring wine, beer, and special cocktails inspired by the exhibition.
Exhibition runs September 23, 2023 – January 21, 2024.
Unexpected: The Life and Art of Sophie Pemberton, Canadian Artist is presented by Heffel and generously supported by the Gallery Associates.
