Donation of Artwork
The AGGV is immensely grateful for the donations of artwork it has received over its 80-year history. Our nationally significant collection is a tribute to the confidence that donors hold for the Gallery’s care in the preservation and exhibition of their gifted artwork.
The acquisition process is a team effort. Our acquisitions are carefully considered, and the subject of rigorous research. Please scroll down and read our Acquisition Guidelines to learn more.
The following steps are a general guideline on the art donation process at the Gallery, meant to inform prospective donors on what to expect:
- Initial contact between a donor and the Gallery is handled in writing, preferably using the online Art Donation Form accessible at the bottom of this page. It should include as much background information on the proposed donation as possible (i.e. artist, title, date, size, medium and support, condition, provenance etc.) as well as photographs.
- If the donation is of potential interest to the Gallery, arrangements are made for a Curator to see the work(s) either in person or remotely (pictures).
- Please note that we do not accept objects at the door without formal arrangements being made in advance.
- Further discussions, involving the Gallery CEO, curatorial staff and collection staff, factor in relevance, duplication, condition, provenance, available space and the Gallery’s ability to care for the proposed donation. This step might take some time, depending on the complexity of the donation.
- If the donation is considered an acquisition priority, a Curator will prepare a written justification and present it to the Works of Art Committee (WOAC) as a potential addition to the Collection. The WOAC is an advisory body to the AGGV Board of Directors. All new acquisitions to the Collection must be approved by the WOAC. The Committee generally meets three times a year.
- The AGGV is a registered charity and can produce tax receipts after coordinating evaluations with an independent third-party appraiser.
- Once the donation has been approved by the WOAC and appraised, deeds of gift will be drafted to transfer ownership of the work(s) of art from the donor to the Gallery. Tax receipts are issued for the year in which legal ownership has been transferred to the AGGV.
- In exceptional circumstances, the AGGV may apply to have a work of art certified as cultural property by the Canadian Cultural Property Export Review Board (CCPERB), if the work is considered of outstanding significance and national importance. Please refer to the CCPERB website for full details, deadlines and eligibility requirements.
