“Derek makes his sculptural paintings from natural, earthbound imagery using the simplest of materials. His paintings are on wood panels which he elaborates variously with modelling paste, wood detail, paper, gold and silver leaf to complement what can be achieved with acrylic paint. The texturing is all done by hand, often transforming the materials into quite different substances, and something of this alchemical process can be felt in his work. The images come from geological, biological, and cultural spheres, and can be accompanied by geometrical and mythological patterning to create both abstract and totemic works.
Derek describes his as a grounded art, always at one with the materials from which it is made.”
