Celebration of Matriarchs Featuring ANSWER Drum Group
Oct 5 | 2:00 pm - 4:30 pmJoin us in celebration of the artists in Matriarchs: Prints by First Nations Women with a performance by ANSWER Drum Group and reception.
This intergenerational print exhibition Matriarchs, curated by Margaret August, features works by: Margaret August, Kelly Cannell, Francis Dick, Lou-ann Neel, Sage Paul, Susan Point, Marika Echachis Swan, and Carrielynn Victor. Through this exhibition August shares how her own evolution as an artist is guided by, and a continuum of, the work of these iconic Matriarchs. The exhibition runs until November 24.
As part of this celebration we are thrilled to have a performance by ANSWER Drum Group. ANSWER is an urban Victoria women’s drum group with representation from Nuuchahnulth, Mohawk, M’iqmaw, Anishnawbe, Métis and Cree women. This circle of women who deal with the lived trauma and impacts of colonialism use culture, song and drumming to heal.
The women of ANSWER reside on Lekwungen and Esquimalt territories and include Jessica Sault, Alysha Brown, Nicole Mandryk, Sara Rhude, Tara Scott, Jena Bailey and Katie Jacobs. They are locally known as educators, healers, medicine women, artists, knowledge keepers, counselors, youth workers, social workers, sisters, cousins, elders, mothers, grandmothers, matriarchs, and warriors. ANSWER is an acronym for All Nations Strong Women for Education and Reconciliation.
