Andy Lou
Andy Shutse Lou is a classically trained, award-winning artist based in Victoria, B.C., Canada. Born in China and educated in the United States, Andy holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of North Texas. Following his graduation, he has taught contemporary Chinese brush painting workshops across Canada, the U.S., and China.
Andy’s art uniquely blends Eastern tradition with Western innovation. While his foundation lies in classical Chinese painting, he draws upon a wide range of Western techniques and influences. Using traditional materials such as Chinese brushes, rice paper, and ink—combined with watercolor, gouache, and acrylic—he creates vivid visual narratives of North American landscapes. His work is characterized by vibrant color contrasts and a compelling fusion of old and new, where the subtlety of ink meets the dynamism of contemporary Western art.
His cross-cultural, mixed-media paintings have been exhibited and collected internationally. Andy has received numerous awards and has been featured in a variety of publications. Notably, his work was exhibited in Crossing: Art, Heritage, and Personal Journeys at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria—an exhibition recognized by The Globe and Mail as one of the most intriguing art shows in Canada in 2024.
In addition to his artistic achievements, Andy is also an accomplished author. He has written or co-authored five books on Chinese brush painting, further contributing to the understanding and appreciation of this art form worldwide.
