October 20, 2007 - October 20, 2007Feast for a Scavenger, Artist in Residence, Rebecca Belmore is in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Canada Council for the Arts.

The residency will be located at Market Square, Unit 41 Anishinabe artist Rebecca Belmore participates in a artist’s residency, Launch, a poetic reflection on contemporary global ecology. Belmore has created sculptures, installations, videos and performances that explore historical, cultural and political ideas of self and community.
The official representative for Canada at the 2005 Venice Biennale, she has exhibited internationally since 1987. During residency, Aboriginal youth from School Districts 61, 62, 63 & 93 will be invited to work with Rebecca Belmore, one of Canada?s foremost practitioners in new media and performance art, and the Aboriginal crew of the First Nations arts and culture television series The New Canoe.
The New Canoe is an Aboriginal arts and culture television series produced by Victoria-based Aarow Productions Inc. which features interviews and performances with contemporary and traditional Aboriginal visual artists, musicians, dancers, writers, actors, filmmakers and storytellers. Mentored by Kwakwaka?wakw video-producer, storyteller and program host Michael Glendale, students will digitally document the progress of Rebecca Belmore?s project, their experiences working together, and the final ceremony. The final video piece that they create will be shown both at the Gallery and through the Transporters blog at a later date.
Feast for a Scavenger will be presented to the public on November 4, 2007 at 10:00am in Horseshoe Bay, Dallas Road Beach.
