Blackspace Sci-Fi Club
Hosted by film and dance artist Kemi Craig, Blackspace Sci-Fi Club is a space to gather and explore fantasy, speculative narratives, and science fiction by and for people of the African diaspora. Over three sessions, a lounge space will be offered at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, for us to imagine, dream, be empowered, and be inspired by stories that conceptualize Blackness at the merging of past, present, and future. Each session will have a unique focus drawing on music, books, and art as vehicles for connection and conversation.
This exciting in-person series is in conjunction with AGGV project Blueprints for the Afrofuture curated by guest curator, Kemi Craig.
Save the dates for Blackspace Sci-Fi Club and check out the program line-up below!
October 6 | Black Sci-Fi Sounds | 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM
Listen to records from visionaries such as Drexciya, Sun Ra, Grace Jones, Janelle Monae, Sons of Kemet, Flying Lotus, and Shabazz Palaces. These musicians and performance artists use mediums of jazz, techno, and pop to fabricate undersea worlds, intergalactic homes, and new perspectives on our everyday experiences. Bring a favorite artist that you would like to add as well!
November 3 | Black Sci-Fi Book Club | 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM
Share stories from science fiction writers of the African diaspora that you may already know such as Octavia Butler, Nalo Hopkins and N.K. Jemisen, to others that you may not have heard of such as River Solomons, Samuel Delaney, and Roxanne Gay. From graphic novels, short stories, and novels to poetry and comic books, there should be something for readers of all ages and interests. You don’t need to have read anything before coming to this book club. Instead, we will introduce and create access to a library of content that you can read or listen to afterward.
December 1 | Black Sci-Fi Art | 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM
Look at the work of contemporary artists of the African diaspora who work through mediums such as performance, new media, photography, painting, collage, and installation and do an art-making activity inspired by one of their techniques. No art experience is necessary!
Blackspace Sci-fi Club Series is an invitation to people who identify as a person of the African Diaspora or as Black. Admission by donation.
