Governor General’s Awards in Visual and Media Arts 2021

Canada’s prestigious Governor General’s Awards in Visual and Media Arts is a lifetime achievement award recognizing an artist’s career, body of work and contribution to the visual arts, media arts and fine craft in Canada. In 2021, eight artists were celebrated in recognition of their exceptional careers and remarkable contributions to the visual arts, media arts and fine craft. The 2021 winners are pictured above in order of appearance left to right: Lou Lynn, Dempsey Bob, Bonnie Devine, Luc Courchesne, Cheryl L’Hirondelle, Bryce Kanbara, Lori Blondeau and Germaine Arnaktauyok.

This exhibition, presented by the AGGV in collaboration with the Canada Council for the Arts, presents the work of the 2021 award winners. It is a rare opportunity to see the work of these artists, who live in all parts of Canada, together in one location. The AGGV is honoured to have been selected by the Canada Council for the Arts to curate and host the 2021 exhibition.

The Governor General’s Awards were created in 1999 by the Canada Council and the Governor General of Canada to celebrate Canada’s vibrant arts community and recognize remarkable careers in the visual and media arts. Over the last two decades, a total of 200 contemporary artists and arts professionals have been honoured.

The Governor General’s Awards in Visual and Media Arts 2021 exhibition is organized by the AGGV and curated by Jaimie Isaac, with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts.

Depuis 22 ans, les Prix du Gouverneur général en arts visuels et en arts médiatiques célèbrent la carrière de certains des artistes les plus accomplis au Canada. Créés par le Conseil des arts du Canada et le gouverneur général du Canada, ces prix annuels mettent en lumière l’ampleur du talent au pays, qu’il s’agisse de souligner une contribution extraordinaire ou l’ensemble des réalisations d’une ou d’un artiste dans un métier d’art ou dans les arts visuels et médiatiques.
Les prix de 2021 ont été remis à huit gagnantes et gagnants : Germaine Arnaktauyok, Lori Blondeau, Dempsey Bob, Luc Courchesne, Bonnie Devine, Bryce Kanbara, Lou Lynn (Prix Saidye-Bronfman) et Cheryl L’Hirondelle.

C’est avec beaucoup d’enthousiasme que je tiens à souligner le travail inspirant et la contribution exceptionnelle de ces artistes de talent », dit Simon Brault, directeur et chef de la direction du Conseil des arts du Canada. « Nous avons décerné un nombre inégalé de prix à des gagnantes et des gagnants inuits, métis et des Premières Nations. Ce moment charnière témoigne de la puissance de l’art – particulièrement autochtone – au pays. 

Nancy Noble, directrice de l’Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, ajoute que le travail de ces artistes d’exception illustre la diversité des pratiques artistiques au pays, particulièrement parmi les artistes autochtones. La galerie réitère sa promesse d’appuyer le travail de bon nombre d’artistes grâce à ses pratiques d’acquisition ainsi qu’à une programmation et des expositions équitables et axées sur la communauté.
