Indian and Persian Miniature Paintings
September 16, 2011 - September 16, 2011Indian and Persian miniature paintings and calligraphy provide an excellent opportunity for the study of the variety and excellence of artistic expression within the limitations of a surface the size of a book page.
Not only was the miniature painter confined by the small scale but also sometimes by the encroaching calligraphy. Furthermore, the subject matter of the works was carefully limited. Since the image was probably prescribed by religion, mythology, or literature, and the wishes of the patron, there was limited creative freedom for the artist. The miniature prints in this exhibition include prints with Muslim themes as well as some Rajput Hindu themed paintings.
