Diane McCarten

Diane McCarten was born in Calgary and recognized as a child that she loved drawing and painting. She began her art career painting portraits, figures and landscapes in oil, pastel and watercolour. During the early 1990’s her work evolved to abstract and non-objective. Her preferred medium now is acrylic and mixed media. She works intuitively. Her work represents thoughts and feelings that she has about the mystery of life.

My inspiration is human spirit and emotion. I am motivated to paint feelings which can’t be physically measured but can be sensed. Expressions such as joy, sadness, humour, and love frequently find their way into my work. I often choose to convey the feelings by creating “beings” (humanoid or creature like forms) who seem to direct me during the painting process. I work intuitively and like to experiment. Each painting is a surprise to me.

Diane McCarten holds an art major, B.Ed. 1975 from the University of Alberta. She furthered her art education through workshops, independent study and attended The Glassell School of Art in Houston, Texas where she earned two scholarships. She has had several solo exhibitions and been included and earned awards in numerous juried exhibitions in several countries. Select solo exhibitions include Museum of Fine Arts, Valletta, Malta, and The Jung Center, Houston, Texas. Some juried group shows which she participated in include the San Diego International, Ventura College, Ca., Adirondaks National Watermedia, N.Y., Sooke Fine Arts Show, Sidney Fine Arts Show and POTE, Vancouver. As well as exhibiting her work over the years, she has also taught, served as a juror, given art lectures, been published in a book and several magazines, given demos, painted with sick children in an Art in Medicine program, painted school murals, and painted stage sets for both amateur and professional Drama productions.
