Painting

Corre Alice

I was born during the sixties on the coast of British Columbia, I’ve birthed sons, gardens and houses, but I’ve always been an artist – there was never any question about that. I paint for different reasons and I paint different genres.

When I paint flowers, bees and trees it’s with a light heart and gratitude for this world of ours. It’s about colour and joy.

The series ‘Geometric’ and ‘Cellular’ were created from scientific concepts that intrigue me: ideas that came together during long walks or during those sleepless hours of early morning. Exciting heady concepts that light a spark in me, becoming an irresistible urge that seeks expression and makes me feel brilliant in the process.

Then there is the painting that is closest to me. The painting that is me, and me only. These are the painting that moves me through times of heartache and fear, to places of acceptance and peace; the paintings that make me okay. I paint them for no one but myself using all my skill to make emotion physical. It’s alchemy of the spirit, a laying on of paint that transforms what is, to what is possible. ‘Being’ is an example of this work.

My oil painting often explores the relationship between the emotional and the intellectual and is an intuitive response with distinctly personal marks. I paint freely but with formal restraints, respecting the integrity of the structure in the attempt to create tension. I intend to communicate to the viewer a recognizable sensation by forcing expression into a system, impulsively painting with regard to the logical.

The unapologetic confidence of abstract expressionism inspires me. The work of Willem De Kooning, Arshile Gorky, Helen Frankenthaler, Richard Diebenkorn, Joan Mitchell, Cy Twombly and Joan Snyder are artists I admire. I relate to the surrealist movement in regards to automatic drawing, using the creative unconscious as a valid navigational tool.
