Painting
Chris Alers
I see my completed canvas as an evolution. Marks and strokes made in the beginning are built on or edited. Editing doesn’t necessarily mean completely gone. They become a part of the history of the painting and their shadow effect is an enhancement.
I work between the two main processes of control and spontaneity. The control lies in the conscious choices I make to strengthen the painting, and spontaneity creates interesting effects that I build on. The paint is allowed to express itself by the way it moves and dries and the negative spaces chosen are key to its development.
The forms that I isolate are very organic in shape and suggest aspects of nature. Ultimately, for me, painting is a meditative experience.
