Painting

Chris Alers

“I see my completed canvas as an evolution. Marks and strokes made in the beginning are built on or edited. Editing doesn’t necessarily mean completely gone. They become a part of the history of the painting and their shadow effect is an enhancement.

I work between the two main processes of control and spontaneity. The control lies in the conscious choices I make to strengthen the painting, and spontaneity creates interesting effects that I build on. The paint is allowed to express itself by the way it moves and dries and the negative spaces chosen are key to its development.

The forms that I isolate are very organic in shape and suggest aspects of nature. Ultimately, for me, painting is a meditative experience.”
