Forest Breath: A Portrait in Progress with Leila Sujir
Sunday, August 12, 2018 | 2-4pm | Port Renfrew Elementary, 6633 Deering Road
We are so pleased to launch the fourth installment of our OFFSITE | INSIGHT series in August! Get ready for a summer road trip to Port Renfrew and prepare to experience the forest in a unique way – from the three dimensional and digital lens of artist Leila Sujir.
Please join us at the Port Renfrew Elementary School for a screening of Forest Breath: A Portrait in Progress, a 3D stereoscopic video installation filmed with an IMAX rig with two Sony F65 8k cameras in the south Walbran.
This screening is an opportunity to experience an innovative work in development, to meet the artist, and to contribute insights towards a broader understanding of these unique forests. This video is from the same body of Sujir’s work as seen in current exhibition Supernatural: Art Technology and the Forest.
Free event (indoors). Participants will need to organize their own transportation. The screening is a casual drop-in format. Port Renfrew is approximately a 2-hour drive from Victoria.
Forest Breath records particular moments in the forests around Port Renfrew, primarily in the south Walbran, near Emerald Pool, as well as in the Red Creek Fir area in the traditional territories of the Pacheedaht people. The resolution of the video allows viewers to stand in a forest of moving pixels. The video space has volume, a blur of colours as it moves from one space of the forest to another. The space of the video, like the space of the forest, is a site of research, contemplation, and healing.
The artist states, “These West Coast forests are where my mother took me as a young twenty-four year old, after a serious operation for cancer. I didn’t die, to my surprise. The forest was where I found wonder and learned how to be alive again.”
The Port Renfrew Elementary School is located on the traditional territory of the Pacheedaht Nation. The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria extends our gratitude and appreciation for the opportunity to visit and work on this territory.
The Port Renfrew Elementary School is wheelchair accessible with a ramp to the side entrance and into the gym. There are two washrooms close to the gym that are wheelchair accessible.
