Unformable Things:
Emily Carr and Some Canadian Modernists
January 19, 2019 - March 17, 2020 Curated by Michelle Jacques | Graham GalleryFeaturing the work of Emily Carr alongside some of her notable Canadian peers, including Lawren Harris, A.Y. Jackson, Pegi Nicol MacLeod, David Milne, and Florence Helena McGillivray, Unformable Things: Emily Carr and Some Canadian Modernists explores the emergence of an increasingly experimental approach to art-making in Canada, an approach which Carr once described as the search for “essence,” or “the unformable things one wants to paint.” All of the work is drawn from the collection of the AGGV, and while the Victoria-based Carr often described herself as isolated from artists in other parts of the country, this exhibition celebrates her connections to a broader narrative.
