Phyllis Serota: Order & Chaos

Phyllis Serota was born in Chicago in 1938 — the year of the infamous Kristallnacht in Berlin. Though of Jewish decent, the impact of the Holocaust was not fully felt by Serota until years later.

This exhibition came about when the Holocaust Centre in Vancouver asked Serota to prepare for exhibit several pieces with a Jewish theme. The result is a powerful exploration of humanity and inhumanity during the Holocaust — of the reification of people and their emotions — an exploration that is all the more timely with this, the 60th anniversary of Kristallnacht.
