The Acerbic Emily: Illustrations by Emily Carr from the Collection of the British Columbia Archives

Emily Carr is internationally acclaimed for her powerful views of the rainforest, depictions of totem poles, and award-winning books. She is not as broadly known for her acerbic wit as is seen in the sketches included in this small exhibition.

Twenty works on paper, from the collection of the British Columbia Archives, provide further insight into the complexities of Emily Carr. The artist made them from 1902 to about 1918. Her sharp, analytical eye records various scenes of the day and her written comments leave no doubt in our mind as to her thoughts about contemporary society. Scene from a Ball, Women Helping Chinese Servant and Parting is Less than Amicable are among the caustic cartoons on view.
