Interface: The New Victoria Open
June 25, 2004 - June 25, 2004Interface explores how artists working in various media on Vancouver Island and in the Gulf Islands respond to and incorporate the diverse meanings of the term ?interface? into their current art practice. While initially inspired by last year’s provincial forest fires, the theme of ‘interface’ allows a diversity of ideas to be presented. As described in the call for proposals, this includes (but is not limited to) the past, present and future consequences of a quickly eroding urban/rural boundary; the common ground or meeting place between different entities be they physical, emotional or spiritual; and a system or language that is constructed in order to communicate with another system outside of itself be it animal, human or machine. It has been exciting and fun to meet and communicate, to “interface” as it were, with some of the 120 artists who submitted proposals to this exhibition. While I have been impressed by the depth and range of work I have seen I was not surprised. I expected to be presented with a range of art that was challenging, informed and competent and that is what I saw.
