In this adult workshop, artists of all levels will learn how to draw and paint figures in a relaxed and expressionistic manner using charcoal and acrylic paint. Begin the evening exploring the In The Flesh exhibition with included artist Elly Smallwood, viewing her artwork to learn more about her process, before beginning your own unique work of art. 

Beginning with charcoal and a photographic image, Smallwood will guide you through the first steps of creating a figural sketch on your canvas. Smallwood will then provide a painting demonstration in which you will learn how to create with loose brushstrokes to build upon your sketch with acrylic paint, resulting in a one of a kind expressionistic figural artwork. The evening ends with the opportunity for everyone to share their work and discuss the experience, along with the opportunity for Smallwood to provide feedback and advice going forward. This will be a Valentine’s Day experience you won’t soon forget!

Elly Smallwood is a figurative artist living in the woods near Ottawa. Her focus is large paintings of figures and faces in acrylic and oil. Her paintings aim to capture the intimacy and vulnerability of the human body.
