Art of Jewish Life
November 6, 1998 - November 6, 1998Art and religion can each be used to beautify or sanctify the everyday. This exhibition examines the relationship between art and religion, in this case, the Jewish religion.
Drawn entirely from private collections from the Victoria and Vancouver areas, this exhibition is about the objects through which Jewish life is lived ? not only the most valuable pieces that belong in a museum, but the treasured objects found in most homes.
Used at home or in the synagogue, their role in enhancing the relationship with the devine is explored. Victoria?s landmark synagogue, the oldest surviving synagogue in Canada, is also a focus in this exhibition.
