⬛ Exhibition Highlight - Fifty Shades of Ink: Ink Paintings from the AGGV Collection ⬛

The Writing Box (Suzuribako) is a traditional Japanese box used to hold the tools of calligraphy, including an inkstone, ink stick, brushes, and a small water dropper. Often made of lacquered wood, Suzuribako are both functional objects and works of art.

This exquisite example, made in 1849 and now in the AGGV collection, is an exceptional piece of lacquer work. The lid is richly decorated with lacquer, gold, pewter, and mother-of-peal in a design of the Thirty-Six Famous Poets, while the interior reveals a quieter scene of plovers set against a shimmering "nashiji" ground.

This piece is featured in the exhibition "Fifty Shades of Ink: Ink Paintings from the AGGV Collection", curated by Dr. Heng Wu, AGGV Curator of Asian Art. Exhibition runs until April 26, 2025.
