Volunteering

The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria recognizes the commitment and expertise from each of our volunteers as one of the most valuable assets to our organization. We have more than 300 volunteers who work together with our staff as Gallery Shop Assistants, Docents, special event Hosts, as well as in many departments including Education, Development and our annual Art Gallery Paint In. If you are keen on learning and love art, we would be eager to hear from you!

Please remember to fill out a Volunteer Application if you are a new to our program.

Gallery in the Schools

This outreach program is designed to encourage keen observation, give students an opportunity to hear and respect the views of others and stimulate creative thinking and problem solving. Over 40 trained volunteers visit 200 elementary and middle schools in five school districts reaching approximately 10,000 students. From October – May, students receive exposure to the world’s master artists, as well as Canadian and British Columbian, First Nations and contemporary artists. Volunteers provide hour-long presentation using original works of art from the Gallery’s permanent collection.

Administration

From time to time, the Gallery administration staff (Development, Communications, Curatorial & Collections, and Accounting departments) require extra help with filing, photocopying, stuffing envelopes, etc. Administration volunteers are on an on-call basis. Previous office experience is preferred but not essential.

Hospitality & Special Events

The Gallery hosts many special events during the year including opening receptions, and private functions. Positions in hospitality involve greeting (information providers,) set-up/take down, coat check, manning of membership tables, and serving food and drinks, etc.

Education

Family Sundays are offered once per month, October through March from 2 – 4 pm. Each event focuses on a current exhibition or related topic, offering the participants the opportunity to make art, learn about the art and to have fun. Volunteers facilitate the children’s art making and help with the set up and take down of the event. These volunteers should be comfortable working with children and have some experience with children’s art making.
