DescriptionPalanquin is made of wood and is lacquered with dark amber nashiji ground. It is decorated with gold crests of the Tokugawa family and with bamboo in gold, green, bronze and brown maki-e lacquer.
The edges are trimmed with decorative brass ornaments. The pole is decorated with the Tokugawa mon or family crest and the trailing leaf design. There is a barred window on the front side and in each of the sliding doors at the sides. On the ceiling is brown lacquered wood with gold leaf, on the side walls and front wall are painted textile panels of spring flowers beside a river, and on the back painted panel are cranes nesting in an old pine tree. (Palanquins, such as this one, were used by feudal lords called daimyo during the Edo period.)
