DescriptionJohn Leveson - Gower, 1st Earl Gower died 1754. He & his father rose to power through their support of the first three Hanoverian Kings. In 1740 he was one of the Lords Justices of the Kingdom during the King's absence in Hanover, three years later he was made Lord Privy Seal & a Privy Councilor. He raised a regiment of foot for the King's service during the Jacobite rebellion of 1745 & in recognition of his loyality was made Vicount Trentham & Earl Gower in 1746. In the print Lord G. leans against a ledge on which rests the gold & crimson velvet sachel of the Great Seal.Status
