Donna Ion is a Victoria-based artist whose instantly recognizable paintings explore the beauty of our rainforests through a unique, impressionistic approach. Following a successful teaching career, Donna pursued her lifelong interest in painting to interpret our beautiful Vancouver Island environment. Donna’s work has been shown several times at the juried Sydney and Sooke Fine Arts Shows. Her paintings have been in the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria Art Rental & Sales program for over eight years.
“My landscape paintings are an outlet for my love of colour applied to the beauty around us. My works have evolved into ever more impressionistic compositions that have as much to do with the interplay of colour, light, shapes and space, as they do with the actual scene. I try not to paint ‘scenes’, but to create a mood or a vignette, that enables everyone to recall the beautiful landscapes that surround them. Composition is important to me, as are colour and pattern. My paintings can be seen as more than landscapes and enter into the realm of the abstract. Influenced by several local artists and an awareness of Canada’s rich art heritage, I have worked to create a fresh, contemporary style that is my own.”
