James Whistler was an American artist who was heavily involved in the British and French art scenes of the second half of the 19th century. He had an international reputation for his paintings showing the influence of the realism of Courbet and Orientalism. Whistler first achieved critical and commercial success as an etcher, producing meticulously drawn prints of working-class life in rural France and London.
