Susan Point

First Nations artist; Susan Point was born in Alert Bay, BC in 1952 and raised on the Musqueam First Nation Reservation in Vancouver. She is a member of the Coast Salish Nation and she currently resides in Vancouver. She was mentored by her mother, Edna Grant-Point and her uncle, Dominic Point. Her work began with precious metal engravings in 1981 and has since spanned into various large public art commissions using glass, wood, steel, and concrete. Point's training in blown and cast glass was honed through her stay at the Pilchuck Glass School in Stanwood, Washington as an artist-in-residence. She utilizes traditional Coast Salish artisan patterns, such as spindle whorls, and fuses them in an innovative manner with glass along with other non-organic and organic materials. Susan Point has been exhibiting her work since 1986, when she took part in a show organized by the Museum of Anthropology at UBC. In 1989, she commissioned to create a piece for the new terminal at the Vancouver International Airport. Since the early 1990s, Susan has received numerous, large-scale public commissions. In March 2004, whe was appointed to the Royal Canadian Academy and 2006 shw was awarded the Order of Canada. Susan has works in private and coprporate collections in over 20 countries.
