Tanyu Kano
Eldest son of Kano Takanobu, grandson of Kano Eitoku. Studies under Kano Koi. In 1614 moved from Kyoto to Edo. Patronized by shogun Hidetada. Eventually became edokoro azukari, founding the branch of the Kano school known as the Kajibashi after his residential district. In 1636, at the shogun's order, became a monk and changed his name from Morinobu to Tanyu. In 1638 received title of hogen, in 1665 that of hoin. Often gave opinions on quality, authenticity and monetary value of paintings brought to his studio. Called the "revitolizer of the Kano School," he established the Kano style at the Edokoro; but his famous scroll, Toshogu Engi was painted in the Tosa style. He also worked in Muromachi style of ink painting. Foremost artist of his day, frequently and deceptively imitated.
