BiographyBorn an lived in Edo. First teacher was Okajima Rinsai. Unsuccessful attempt to enter school of Utagawa Toyokuni. At 14 became pupil of Utagawa Toyohiro. Studied nanga with Ooka Umpo. Interested in Western Art and work of Shijo school. Took name of Hiroshige in 1812. In 1833, following a trip on the To Raido, produced his famous Takaido Gojusan Tsugi (fifty-three stations of the Tokaido). Gradually gave up fijuke prints for landscapes and kachoga.
