B. C. Binning

Binning is a seminal modernist in the history of art in Canada and in British Columbia. He was a teacher, painter, mosaicist and designer as well as a dynamic "cultural Catalyst in the vanguard of the nascent Vancouver art scene" . Some feel he was foremost a draughtsman. He studied in England at several schools, most notably at the Ozenfant Academy under AmÚdÚe Ozenfant and Henry Moore in 1938. The next year studied at the New York Art Students' League. Taught architecture at UBC beginning 1949 and Head of Department of Fine Arts at UBC beginning 1955. He was a strong believer in the bonds between architecture, design, and fine art; and the importance of these arts to the development of the individual and society as a whole.
