Eric BergmanCanadian, 1838 - 1934
Bergman was born in Germany but moved to Winnipeg in 1914 to work as a commercial artist for Brigdens of Winnipeg, a firm that largely produced the Western Canadian version of the Eaton's Mail order Catalogue. There, Berman developed and applied his master skills as a wood-engraver. Outside of work he was a fine artist producing paintings, silverpoint drawings, and wood engravings, for which he has become the most well-known. His prints are in collections across Canada.
This scene is of the Fort Garry gate, all that remains of the original fort which established Winnipeg as a city in the 19th century. Bergman as well as Phillips are among the most prominent printmakers of the first half of the 20th century in Western Canada.
