DescriptionBedspread (87.27.1.1 a-e) container is a rectangular lacquered wood lidded box(87.27.1.2 a,b) with scalloped edges. There are brass handles at each end. The box is also held together by a leather strap(87.27.1.2e) which has a metal buckle. The cover is rust lacquer with gold design motifs of men, butterflies, flowers etc. The center of the lid is a raised black lacquer reserve with a gold painted scene of people in front of a house. The interior of the lid is black lacquer, in the centre is a painted circular design in gold with floral motifs. Inside the wooden container is a fabric wrapped cardboard box(87.27.1. 2c,d) the lid of which is highly decorated painted paper with a central scene of people on the porch of a house. The people have painted ivory faces & their clothes are actually fabric - these being glued to the paper support to form a low relief collage.Status
