DescriptionThe Burmese learned from the Chinese the technique of working in dry lacquer and used it extensively starting from the last decades of the 17th century. This exquisite lacquer piece is a fine example of early Burmese lacquer. The face of this monk is marked by the gentle expression of the Mandalay style. The monk is shown kneeling in the attitude of prayer, with his hands pressed together in front of his chest. His facial features and dress are those of a young monk.
His beautifully rendered robe drapes from his left shoulder and is set with coloured mirror-glass.
