DescriptionMagnus Maximus rebelling against the rule of Valentinian, had taken control of Gaul (now France) & was contemplating the invasion of Italy. Ambrose (C. 340 - 397), on of the most important of Latin clerics, was Bishop of Milan, & was sent to treat with Maximus. The saint was able to persuade Maximus to lay down his arms (note the armour, sword & standard in the foreground) & leave Italy unmolested.Status
