DescriptionThis sculpture may have been carved as one of a pair intended to be door guardians for a rural Buddhist sanctuary or home shrine. The craftsman who produced this work has aptly captured the ferocity of the lion and reveals his visual sophistication in his handling of the hairy spirals and the snarling pose. The raised right paw may indicate that it once played with a ball.
