DescriptionThis robe is made of pale green silk woven with a hidden design of the symbols of the 8 Taoist Immortals(see cat sheet for their names & symbols); . The border is embroidered with simplistic renditions of trees, pavilions, flowers, bridges & little children playing with toys or enjoying themselves. Embroidery on the 2 sleeve-cuffs: right sleeve- 2 young boys in a landscape setting, one holding a vase with a willow branch & another playing with a lotus flower; other motifs: tree peony -symbol of spring, love, wealth; pine tree-symbol of longevity, butterflies-symbol of joy, summer & longevity, willow tree- Buddhist symbol of meekness, also sign of spring; left sleeve- 2 yound boys in a landscape setting, one resting in a pavilion & another presenting a tray & bowl; other motifs- chrysanthemums-symbol of joy & autumn, bamboo-symbol of longevity because durable & evergreen, plum tree -symbol of winter & longevity because it blossoms in coldness. This is probably a child's coat because of the simplistic representation of playful children in the embroidery. Also, many symbols relate to longevity - the usual well-wishing message found in children's robes.Status
