DescriptionIn this print the artist depicts the influence of good and evil on the lives of men and women in Japan. Good and evil appear as tiny anthropomorphic figures, with the appropriate kanji character for good or evil on each face. In the top scene, evil spirits are depicted as crude and violent, inciting acts of violence and immorality, such as drinking to excess and neglecting one’s family and duties. In the bottom scene, good spirits are shown encouraging and supporting positive behaviours, such as honouring the family and engaging in charitable work.Status
