DescriptionThese panels are said to have come from the 1904 British expedition led by Younghusband, when several hundred Tibetans were brutally massacred by the expeditionary troops. The panels are in heavy relief and show a warrior on a leogryph (sardula) towering over an elephant on a lotus flower. The elephant is the support of the world and serves as a symbol of the earth.
The leogryph symbolizes the solar power of manifestation. Next to the leogryphs are large figures of bejewelled bodhisattvas.
