Artist Sybil Andrews (1898-1992) is considered one of the most significant Canadian printmakers of the 20th century.Mainly known for her linocut prints she was influenced stylistically by the Cubism, Italian Futurism, and Vorticism and found her primary interest in the rhythm, pattern, and movement of her subjects. Following World War II she immigrated from Britain to Campbell River, British Columbia where she spent the rest of her life adapting her modernist approach to decidedly West Coast subjects related to First Nations culture, the rainforest, and the logging and fishing industries. This exhibition includes 22 works from the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria’s fine survey representing Andrews’ career in Britain and Canada.
