Washington F. FriendCanadian, 1820 - 1891

Washington Friend was a painter and panoramist who travelled around U.S. and Canada making paintings in the 1840s with a goal of creating an enormous panoramic view of the scenery of both nations. He was quite a character, retiring to Quebec where he would sing folk songs in conjunction with the display of his panorama. //Friend represents an excellent example of a self-taught itinerant artist working in Canada in the 19th century. He is in collections across Canada including at the National Gallery.
