Descriptionimpression from woodcut reproduced by lithography; Joseph Chamberlain 1836 - 1914, born London, Statesman. In the early 1850's he came to Birmingham to work for the firm of Nettlefold & was so successful that he was able to retire at the age of 38. In politics he was early envolved in educational reform & other social issues. He was successful in slum clearence & in establishing publically assisted housing & free libraries. The remarkable collection of the Birmingham City Art Gallery is in part the result of his enthusiasm. He was elected to Parliament as a Liberal in 1876 & became a cabinet minister in Gladstones government. He was to become increasingly envolved in Imperial affairs, particularily with the conflict in South Africa between English & Boer settlers which was to lead to the Boer War.
