Gallery in the Schools is an outreach program designed to encourage keen observation, give students an opportunity to hear and respect the views of others, and stimulate creative thinking and problem solving. Over 40 trained volunteers visit 50 elementary and middle schools in five school districts (from Sooke to Salt Spring Island) reaching approximately 10,000 students. From November to May, students receive exposure to the world’s masters including historical and contemporary Canadian, BC and First Nations artists. Volunteers provide hour-long art presentations using original works of art from the Gallery’s permanent collection.

You can now book online for Gallery in the Schools in District 61. Districts 62 and 63 are now full for the year. Please check back in September 2012 for next year’s bookings.

2011 - 2012 Programs*

In the Company of Animals (Grades 1 – 3)

Nepachee | Bird Spirits (1960) | stone cut print | Gift of Mrs PS Widdup

Human animal companionship comes in many forms from friend and pet, to mode of transportation, to spiritual inspiration. Through a selection of drawings, paintings and prints of animals and people, students will practice looking and responding to original art work from the Gallery’s collection. In the process, students will learn to articulate clearly what they see, listen to others’ visual interpretations and honour diverse opinions of the same art work. The discussion will be followed by a drawing activity using pastels.

Images on the Move (Grades 4 - 8)

Shinagawa, Takumi | Dance No. 7 (20th C) | woodcut print | Gift of Fred and Isabel Pollard

Images on the Move examines how artists create the illusion of movement on a static 2-dimensional picture plane. Students will practice their visual thinking skills through looking at, responding to and discussing a variety of dynamic original works of art from the Gallery’s collection. Students will discover techniques to express action and energy in their own art work followed by a hands on art activity focusing on depicting movement through drawing and writing.

Face to Face with Portraits (Grades 4 - 8 Sooke District Only)

Danby, Ken | Lacing Up (1973) | egg tempera on canvas |www.lillithgallery.com

In this 60 minute lesson, students come Face to Face with a variety of contemporary portraits. Portraits are powerful because they connect us directly with their subjects. The more carefully we look at a portrait, the more we find out about the person. By examining details of the physical appearance of the subject in a portrait, what the artist has chosen to include and the emotional tone of the artwork, students will uncover stories that exist within all of us. A related self-portrait project will give students the opportunity to explore and express what may be unseen but essential to their own identity.

* not all programs are available in all school districts
